ENVIRONMENT CARE

As a business that is deeply involved with the environment, D and P Landscaping must take every precaution to ensure that it is carefully protected. We accept that responsibility and take the following measures to ensure that there are no harmful effects or damage as a result of our work.

Erosion Control and Water Run-off

Erosion is the washing away of loosed particles of soil and sediment. Left unchecked it can fill streams and lakes, damaging aquatic life habitats. It can also fill drain pipes and culverts forcing water and soil onto roads and driveways.

Run-off is water that does not soak into the ground and quickly flows to lower areas, including lakes and streams. It carries seeds, fertilizer, pest treatments and other pollutants and is the leading cause of pollution in Virginia's waters, including Smith Mountain Lake and Leesville Lake.

Erosion and run-off also divert water away from areas that need soaking moisture. The loss of water can hurt vegetation and wildlife and deplete groundwater.

D and P Landscaping always takes care to use the following erosion and run-off control measures to protect the environment:

Fertilizer

Proper management of fertilizer requires soil analysis and a thorough understanding of the benefits and hazards of each component of the available products. Unfortunately, many homeowners and lawn care companies ignore guidelines and allow fertilizer to find its way into lakes, streams, rivers and reservoirs and, ultimately, into our drinking water. D and P Landscaping does not!

When retained by a homeowner or commercial organization, D and P will:

Pesticides

Pesticides are chemicals used to control disease, weeds and insects. When applied correctly they can improve plant health, increase crop yield and prevent widespread insect damage. When applied incorrectly they can pollute the environment, affecting humans, wildlife and plants. Many have a long life and can remain in the environment for years.

When used near water, pesticides can kill fish as well as frogs, birds and other wildlife. Predators that eat the poisoned animals can also fall victim to the effect of pesticides.

Pesticides are easy to acquire and easy to apply. The instructions can be complicated and, as a result, are often ignored. They are best handled by trained professionals such as D and P Landscaping.

Integrated Pest Management

D and P practices the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). IPM is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.

Among the common sense practices:
