LAWN CARE

A properly maintained lawn will remain healthy year after year. However, maintenance is not simply a matter of tossing out seeds in the fall and fertilizing each spring. Instead, it is a customized series of steps that must be conducted at the right time throughout the year. These activities include:

D and P Landscaping will help you develop a lawn care plan specifically for your property. The plan can be a full service program completed entirely by D and P or it can include steps that the homeowner conducts themselves. Please contact us for a free estimate.

Aerating

Over the course of a year the soil in your lawn will become compacted. This will be caused by traffic, such as lawn mowers and yard activities, and from soil settling following periods of heavy rain and dryness. Compaction reduces the ability of water and nutrients to penetrate the ground and restricts root growth. The supply of oxygen, which is as important to growth as water, is constricted leading to poor growth and lawn deterioration. Aeration will:

D and P Landscaping uses a particularly effective aerating device known as the AERA-vator. The AERA-vator is designed to stir and loosen the soil beneath the sod without destroying the turf. It creates a core hole, without bringing the core to the surface. The AERA-vator is much more effective that competitive machines and it can be used in wet or dry soil.

Seeding and Sodding

Most lawns will need some re-seeding each year. Normal wear and tear from human traffic or dead spots caused by dryness, disease or pests will need to be repaired. D&P can reseed such areas or over-seed your entire lawn.

If you are installing a brand new lawn, D and P has the expertise and equipment to contour your lot for effective drainage and to prepare the soil for the rapid growth of healthy grass. If you can't wait for a lawn to grow from seed we can lay sod in a matter of hours.

If you are a horse owner, don't forget to take care of your pasture. D and P will re-seed to ensure a full pasture for the horses.

Before planting the first seed or rolling out any sod, D and P will take soil samples to be tested for nutrient deficiencies. Corrective actions will be recommended. We will also select seed or sod known to thrive in the particular soil and climate of each unique lawn.

Fertilizer and Lime

As part of a lawn care plan, D and P may recommend applications of lime to correct the Ph. Many areas of Virginia have soil with high Ph levels that indicate acidity. Acidity in the soil leads to poor plant growth and general health problems. A balanced Ph will also improve the effectiveness of fertilizers.

Several applications of fertilizer each year will keep you lawn green and lush. Soil testing will indicate nutrient deficiencies that can be corrected through fertilizing.

NOT ALL FERTILIZERS ARE ALIKE! Fertilizers contain varied levels of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium. The incorrect blend can leave your lawn under-nourished or can cause damage. Improper application can also lead to the pollution of Smith Mountain and Leesville Lakes. Let D and P's professional consultants advise you as to the best blend.

Weed Control, Pest, Disease Control

D and P's trained professionals can identify the weeds and diseases that are infecting your lawn. If necessary, they will apply chemical treatments in a manner that is safe for the environment and safe for humans and their pets. However, at D and P Landscaping, chemicals are a last resort. We may first recommend non-chemical preventative measures as part of an annual plan for plant health. Please visit our Environment Care page to learn more about our initiatives to minimize the use chemicals and protect the environment.

Insects and other pests are treated based on the common sense principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Click here to learn more about IPM.

Lawn Care Program

A typical lawn care program to get organics into the soil consists of a series of scheduled seedings, fertilizing and treatments. For example, our six step cool season program for bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue consists of:

Round 1 - March. Pre-emergent application
Round 2 - April. Pre-emergent application/broadleaf weed controls
Round 3 - May. Grub control
Round 4 - June. Summer organic fertilizer
Round 5 - September/October. Early fall fertilizer and over-seeding
Round 6 - November/December. Late fall winterizer

Ask our professionals about a program for your lawn.

You can count on us to stay up to date on constantly changing turf treatments and procedures. We regularly attend industry seminars and conferences and stay in constant contact with the manufacturers and suppliers of lawn care products.
